Today was the longest day of the year at my place

No secret in guessing that today is Summer Solstice at my place, when Sun reaches its highest position in the sky. On this day, one of the Earth's pole has its maximum tilt towards the Sun.

Yes, some people are witnessing Winter Solstice today. But at my place, Sunrise was at 5:47 am and Sunset was at 7:27 pm. A good 13 hours and forty minutes of Sunlight!

No prizes for guessing which hemisphere I'm in! 😊

It's a mango season during this time and we get several varieties of mangoes. But every year on this day I wonder if I should continue eating mangoes after this day.

This is due to a tradition my grandpa used to follow. He will stop bringing and eating mangoes after Summer Solstice. I don't know the exact reason behind it but it was perhaps a religious thing. He was a devout follower of Jainism. Perhaps Jains believe that after Summer Solstice, there comes in the rainy season (called Monsoon in India). And because of this, mangoes get infested with several worms. Jains put as much effort as possible to save every life. So they won't eat mangoes after this day.

But my mom says that several varieties of mangoes are harvested after this period. It depends on what variety of mango you are eating. She names so many varieties like Dashheri, Langda, Kalmi, Hapus (Alphonso), Kesar, Totapuri and nos she says some more like Chausa etc. are about to come in the market. Until August, we keep getting new varieties of mangoes.

So why shouldn't we eat mangoes after Summer Solstice?

Have you ever heard any reasoning for not eating mangoes after Summer Solstice?
