After about a decade of protests from environment activists and villagers at the proposed site, Navi Mumbai International Airport project is finally set to be completed soon.
Almost all 10 villages from its 1,160 hectare project area has been evacuated and houses of thousands of Project Affected People (PAP) have been demolished..The completion deadline for this ₹16,000 crore airport is extended until mid 2020 now.
Earlier it was objected that out of the proposed land of 2268 hectares, around 250 hectares was a reserved forest that would be destroyed because of this project.. This included 108 hectares of thick Mangrove forests. Mangrove forests provides habitat to several birds and animals. These also protect us from flood. But Government assured to develop an alternative site by planting mangroves there.
Reclamation of wetland was also being seen as an environmental disaster. Moreover, a hillock was being flattened and a water body was filled up.
A little more than a decade back, Mumbai had suffered severe flood due to construction over Mithi river. The existing Mumbai Airport had turned into a giant swimming pool then.
But with time all legal environmental clearances for Navi Mumbai International Airport were obtained and project was initiated by handing over of land in July, 2018.
Thousands of villagers were evacuated and rehabilitated. However, Government forgot about several hundred lives.
Last week some animal activists went to these villages and found hundreds of starving dogs, puppies, cats & kittens. There were many pregnant dogs and nursing mothers in pathetic condition. Sights of malnourished moms and pups were horrible.
With the help of Hands That Heal, many of these were brought to its shelter. Hands That Heal has a capacity limitation but still it didn't deny these creatures with the needed medical check up, treatment, good food and supplements.
Many more animals need care and shelter and adoption too. With a few animal activists, it's difficult to search and catch all animals in these villages and rescue them.
Therefore if you are at Mumbai and can extend any help or volunteer your time to save their lives, please come forward. If you ain't at Mumbai and want to extend any donations in the form of money, food or medicines, please do not hesitate in these moments of crisis.
